Marion A. “Scrub” Moore  -  91

Marion A. Moore, age 91, of Mt. Carmel, passed peacefully into eternal glory, Tuesday morning, July 24, 2018 at his residence with his family by his side.  Marion was born in Kingsport on February 7, 1927 and grew up in the Orebank community and a 1947 graduate of Blountville High School.  Marion honorably served in the US Navy 1944-1946 on the USS Granville APA-171, a support and rescue operation carrier.   His nickname “Scrub” was laughingly thought have come about from his Seaman beginnings to help “scrub the deck” of the massive war ship.  He received the Asiatic-Pacific Area Ribbon 1 Bronze Star, Victory Medal and American Theatre Ribbon. Upon discharge, Marion attended Holston Institute and ETSU where he studied accounting.  He began employment in 1950 with the Kingsport Press and later employed by Radford AAP, TVA, and Carver Office Equipment, later becoming Todd Office Equipment in Kingsport and retired in 1989.

Lovingly nicknamed “Mern” by his wife, he was the most generous of souls unselfishly offering to help however he could to anyone in a time of need.  His great sense of humor, funny stories, nicknames for everyone and a solid faith shown by an unwavering example of Godly strength and a necessary perseverance of worship by humility shown by a faithful walk thru his life.  An extremely devout UT fan, he proudly wore his UT orange at every chance but favored his golf challenges accomplishing an early wish for a hole-in-one in 1968 with the family respectively reliving the story for many years to come.  Mern will always be remembered for his intense and unconditional love for family and his focused and absolute determination to successfully tackle the newspaper’s daily crossword puzzle!  He and his wife, Hope, completed their retirement dream to visit all 50 states, Canada, Nova Scotia, New Zealand and Australia in 2006.

Marion was a charter member and a former elder of Westridge Presbyterian Church, Mt. Carmel and long-time supporter of Mt. Carmel Senior Center and its BOD.  

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hope C. Moore (2012), parents, John and Monnie Moore, sisters, Jane Moore Crum, Jean Moore, Helen Moore, Mable Preston, and Anna Lee Woodruff.

Marion is survived by his daughter, Marsha Fandl (Chico), granddaughters, Crystal Lorenz (Dave), Jenny Billings (Jeremy), brother, Richard “Dick” Moore, Kingsport; niece, Patty Mears (Doug) and nephew, Steve Crum, both of Richmond, VA. Great-grandsons, Lance Johnson, Luke Hutson and Ayden Billings, sister-in-law, Joyce Cradic, nieces, Janet Cradic and Mary Cradic, Judy Wood, Karen Rutledge (Dennis), Linda Noe, Leanne Larkin (Jimmy) and Donna Salley (Carlos), great-niece, Michelle Mears and great-nephews, Barrett Mears and Kurt Crum, all of Richmond, VA. and Brandon Salley of Chuckey, TN. Several additional nephews, cousins and life-long best friend Bud Greene, Mt. Carmel.

Pallbears will be David “Chico” Fandl, Jeremy Billings, Lance Johnson, Luke Hutson, Steve Crum, Travis Wyatt. 

Honorary pallbearers are Dave Lorenz, Willie Cradic, Doug Skeens, Bill Martin, Bud Bellamy, Jeff Dotson, Barrett Mears and Bud Green.

The family will receive friends Saturday, July 28, 2018, from 5:00 pm -7:00 pm at Carter-Trent Funeral Home in Kingsport.  Funeral service will follow from 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm with Pastor Jeff Morelock officiating.

Graveside services to be held 2:00 pm at Liberty Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carmel, Sunday, July 29, 2018 with Military honors conducted by American Legion Hammond Post #3/265.  Those wishing to go in procession are asked to meet at Carter Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport at 1:15 pm.
