Obituary of Mervin S. Salley

Kingsport – Mervin S. Salley, 86 of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at his residence following a long illness. He played in several sports during high school years at Dobyns Bennet and was a U.S. Navy veteran. Mervin was a retired insurance agent and following retirement, he enjoyed building, investing in real estate and enjoyed singing in different quartets. He was a long time member of Bible Way Baptist Church.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Lena Gooden Salley; brothers, Edgar Salley, D.W. Salley and J.W. Salley; sisters, Annas Ketron, Lucille Carr and Iva Jean Hicks.

 

Mervin is survived by his wife of 66 years, Emma Joyce Salley; daughters, Theresa Flanary, Victoria “Vickie” Sterling and husband Kimball and Kathy Overbay and husband Curtis; 6 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; brother, Don Salley; several nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home. Friends may also call anytime at the residence.

 

A funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Rick Vannoy officiating.

 

A military graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Walnut Chapel Cemetery (East Carters Valley) with the American Legion Hammond Post #3/265 conducting the honors. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:55 a.m.

 

Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport is serving the Salley family.
