Obituary of Walter Frank Hurd

WALTER “FRANK” HURD

Kingsport- Walter “Frank” Hurd, 93, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday evening (November 11, 2018) at his home. He is now reunited with his wife of 68 years, Edna, who had passed less than two weeks prior, and their daughter, Janeen.

Frank is survived by his grandson, Chris Fraser and his wife, Alaina; his great-granddaughters, Isla Fraser and Tori (Austin) Dillard; his sister-in-law, Frances Hurd; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Edna Matlee Hurd; his daughter, Sheri “Janeen” Ward; his parents, Doyle and Ethel Hurd; his sister, Adaline Hurd Surrett; and his brother, Hugh “Jack” Hurd.

Frank was born in Scott County, Virginia, and lived with his family in Whitmire, SC for some time, but he resided the majority of his life in Kingsport with his wife, Edna.

After graduating from Fairview school, Frank served in the army during WWII. He then worked at the Kingsport Press, serving as Superintendent of Warehouse/Distribution for the Grosset & Dunlap division until retiring in 1986.

Frank and Edna met while attending Fairview together and were married in 1950. In 1961 they adopted their beloved daughter, Janeen, who blessed them with their grandson, Chris, in 1980. The blessing of great-granddaughters came later and brought light to Frank’s life in the years following Janeen’s death in 2015.

Frank loved entertaining visitors and always made everyone feel as welcome as family in his home. Everyone who met him will fondly remember his kisses and hugs, as well as his innocent flirtation, as he loved to make people feel loved. Frank also enjoyed traveling and was always inviting others along to share the experience.

Frank loved the Lord and was a faithful member of a few different church congregations over the years, including Heritage Church of God and First Christian Church of Kingsport. Frank’s faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ noticeably shaped the way he lived and loved throughout his remarkable life.

The family will receive friends beginning at 11am on Thursday (November 15, 2018) at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport.  The funeral will begin at 12:00 noon on Thursday (November 15, 2018) in the funeral home chapel with Minister Phip Sams, officiating.  Music will be provided by Tori and Austin Dillard. The American Legion Hammond Post #3/#265 will provide Military rites following the service in the funeral home chapel.  Due to weather, there will not be a graveside service, just an immediate burial at Oak Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Engage Tri-Cities (www.engage.cc) in order to help achieve the mission of seeing lives, families, and our communities changed through the Gospel of Jesus… a mission that both Frank and Edna held in high regard.  You can send online condolence to the family by visiting www.cartertrent.com.  Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport is serving the Hurd family.
