Obituary of Gary Lynn Smith

Gate City – Gary Lynn Smith, 67 of Gate City, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at Holston Valley Medical Center. Born in Kingsport, he had lived in Gate City (Midway community) all of his life. He was retired from AFG and enjoyed being on his farm. Gary was a member of New Beginning Free Will Baptist Church where he served as Sunday school superintendent.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Wilma Gillenwater Smith; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Grace and Kenny France.

 

Gary is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sue France Smith; daughters, Christie Lynn Smith and Connie Bess and husband Brad; grandchildren, Kirsten Starnes, Christian Starnes, Bronson Bess, Bryce Bess and Brady Bess; brother, Jim Smith and wife Janice; several nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Friday, August 9, 2019 at Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City.

 

A funeral service will follow at 7 pm in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Brad Bess officiating.

 

A graveside service will be held at 10 am Saturday, August 10, 2019 at Smith Family Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bronson Bess, Bryce Bess, Christian Starnes, Jackie France, Payton Martin, Josh France, Jamie Smith, Richard Hicks and Chad Debien. Honorary pallbearers will be Ricky France, Brady Bess, Larry Potts, Leslie Carrico and Lennis France. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home by 9 am to go in procession to the cemetery.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family, who plan to purchase fruit trees to continue Gary’s orchard that he so loved.

 

Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City is serving the Smith family.
