Norma “Jean” Cookenour

March 12, 1929 – October 20, 2019

KINGSPORT – Norma “Jean” Cookenour, 90, of Kingsport, went to her eternal home with Our Lord and Savior on Sunday, October 20, 2019.

                The matriarch of the Cookenour family; she dedicated her life to God and her family. She was influential in the lives of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all who were blessed to know her.  Jean was very active in the Ladies’ Auxiliary and a beloved Sunday school teacher for many years and was Co-owner of Cookenour’s Texaco in Weber City, Virginia. She touched the lives of many people with her caring heart, selfless acts, and sage wisdom.

                Jean was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband of 70 years; Eugene Cookenour, beloved son; Chester E. Cookenour; grandson, Brian E. Cookenour; brother, James; sisters, Blanche, Hattie, and Letha; and her parents, Hector and Virgie Lane.

                Left to cherish her memory and carry out her legacy are her children, Michael L. (Jill) Cookenour, Sean Otto Cookenour, and Trish Cookenour (Phil) Davis; grandchildren, Jennifer Jean Cookenour (Brad) Hubmann, Dana Michael (Abby) Davis, Leslie Davis Reynolds, and Houston Matthew Cookenour; great-grandchildren, Lauren and Ellison Lyons, Cooper, Brylee, and Boden Reynolds, Grey and Avery Davis, Adam, Jacob, and David Cookenour; sister, Fannie Steele, and many nieces and nephews.

                The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7p.m. on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, at Carter-Trent Funeral Home in downtown Kingsport. A  Celebration of Life ceremony, officiated by her son, Michael Cookenour, and words of love from her children and grandchildren will be shared beginning at 7:00 p.m.  

                A short graveside service will be held on Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at  Oak Hill Memorial Park with Phil Davis, Dana Davis, Houston Cookenour, Cooper Reynolds, Brad Hubmann, and Martin Bagwell serving as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will be Neil Steele, Steve Yates and Keith McNew. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home by 9:15am to go in procession to the cemetery.
