Obituary of Martha "Olene" Starnes

Indianapolis, IN - Martha Olene Starnes, 88, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away Wednesday, February 19, 2020 after an extended illness at her home. She was born February 15, 1932; Olene was the 3rd of 10 children born to the late Milton and Mima Stallard Gillenwater in Fort Blackmore, VA.

Olene grew up in Scott county and enjoyed her country life and helping with her sisters and brothers. Olene had made her home in Indianapolis, IN, for the past 62 years where she raised her family with her late husband William E Starnes also known as “Junior” and known as “Eddie” by Mom.  

Olene worked 32 years for Roselyn Bakery in their main plant making all the baked goods. After she retired from there she worked for a time at Wells greenhouse as she enjoyed flowers so. Mom loved all flowers but carnations were her favorite. Her and Eddie also become mall walkers and had a wonderful friendship with other mall walkers. They enjoyed that time together.

Olene was a very loving Mother, Mamaw and great Mamaw. She loved her family and spending time with them. The holidays will never be the same without her.

In addition to her parents and her husband she was preceded in death by her sisters, Nina Catron, and Myrtle Lawson; brothers, Paul and Fred Gillenwater.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Starnes; son, Rick Starnes; granddaughters,  Lisa Wilson (Jerry) Katie Hutchinson (Justin); great grandson,  Joshua Doan; great granddaughters Mackenzie, Makaila and Maci Hutchinson; sisters Dorothy Kimbler (William) and Alice Carter; brothers,  C.E. Gillenwater,  Dale Gillenwater (Ann) and Russell Gillenwater (Hazel); brother-in-law, Elmer Starnes (Mae); sister-in-law, Lorene Clawson; along with a host of nieces and nephews. She will always be in our hearts and forever missed and loved.

The family will receive friends from 11 am to 1 pm on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at Scott County Funeral Home.

A service will follow in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Wayne Stallard and Pastor Gene Stallard officiating. Music will be provided by the Quillen family.

Burial will follow at Holston View Cemetery.
