Obituary of Opal Mae Salyer

Opal Mae Salyer, 91, passed away peacefully on the early morning of May 11th to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and to be reunited with her husband, Paul.  Her daughter, Susan was by her side.  Opal was a faithful Christian who attended Kingsport First Assembly Church for many years and was a light to all who knew her.  She will be deeply missed. 

Opal worked in Management at Sears for 32 years and retired to care for her disabled husband, Paul until he passed in 1997.  She enjoyed her retiree luncheons and loved family gatherings.  She would often organize and cook for as many people who would come.  She was truly a treasure to behold.  She was later moved to assisted living in The Village at Allandale and the family would like to thank the staff at Margie’s Meadows for all of their assistance and care for their dear Opal.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents, Jerome and Dora Bowlin; her husband, Paul Salyer; her brothers, James & Jack Bowlin; her sisters, Mary Willis, June Poe, and Norma Worsfold.

She is survived by her sister, Thelma Cline; her daughter, Susan Lewis and husband James; her son Rusty Salyer and wife Betty; her grandchildren, Brooke Price and her husband Brian, Heather Garland and her husband Jeff; and Rod Salyer; her great grandchildren, Jonathan and Jacob Salyer, Will Darnell, and Tyson Garland.  Her love for her family was so profound and her greatest joy.  She showed that every day.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm on Friday, May 15, 2020, at Carter Trent Funeral Home in Kingsport, TN.  A funeral service will follow at 7 pm with Pastor Paul Wright officiating.

A graveside committal service will be conducted at 10 am Saturday in the Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, VA. Family and friends are requested to meet at the cemetery by 9:50 am Saturday. 

Memorial contributions can be made in Opal's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
