I wanted to express my condolences to Uncle Bill’s family. I grew up in Scott County and was blessed to be his niece. I have many fond memories of my childhood years. Our family often had Sunday meals together in my grandparents’ home. We also had fun holiday visits together. I remember how Shannon and Marty, Uncle Bill’s sons, would wrestle together in those days. I also enjoyed reading Uncle Bill’s Hoople articles in the newspaper. Though my husband and I traveled and have lived away from the Tri-Cities, my Uncle Bill and Aunt Rita have thought of us and expressed love to our family throughout the years. May God comfort each of you as you go through these days ahead with Uncle Bill gone on ahead to eternity.

My deepest sympathy goes to the entire Lane family. Bill and I were friends my entire coachlng career of 40 years. He was a big-time sports writer in a small region. Two words describe Bill—-honesty and integrity. Coach Mack Shupe

Sorry to hear of Bill's passing. He and I spent many hours in the pressbox covering various sports. He was a wealth of area sports knowledge and I tried to soak in as much as I could during those times. Bill was not only an excellent sports writer, but he was a fine gentleman with a great sense of humor. My condolences to the family. George Stone

Bill Lane was not only the best sportswriter I have ever known, he was one of the best FRIENDS I have ever known. As a young fan at Sullivans West, then South, to have Bill covering your game that night meant you were big time. He was there when West played its last boys basketball game, it just happened to be Happy Valley's Charlie Bayless' 500th coaching win in 1980. To know Bill is to love him! Rita was my mom's hairstylist. She said that if anything came open at the Times-News, he would let me know. Sure enough, I soon started wotking Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights for the next 3 years. He encouraged me to go out on my own in1989, when I got my first full-time position in Wytheville, Va. as sports editor of the Enterprise. While I wasn't there long, that set me up for later success at the Rogersville Review (twice), TriCitiesSports.com and the Citizen Tribune. I owe a deep gratitude to Bill for believing in me! I'll bet Bill and Jimmy Moore are cutting up at the Pearly Gates! My prayers are with Rita, Shannon, Marty and their families during this difficult time. Love you all!

I am saddened to hear of my friend of near sixty years has passed. I go back with Bill to the sixties with Dobyns Bennett basketball. What a sharp mind he had. He had an uncanny ability to make you think you were better than you actually were. He even gave me one of my acquired nicknames during my life; Mr. Big. Where ever our paths would cross, Bill would always greet me as Mr Big, and then old stories and tales would fly. I believe Bill remembered every game and every play he ever saw. He was a sharp individual. Bill always thought and talked about legends, but the real legend was Bill himself. He is the Sportswriter Legend of our time. My sympathy to Bill’s family, and I thank you for letting Bill be a part of my life. Bill was great and I am going to miss him. RIP Bill
