Obituary of Mamie Elizabeth Nelson

Mamie Elizabeth Nelson, age 86 Kingsport, entered into the arms of Jesus during the afternoon hours of Wednesday, March 16, 2022.  Mamie was born on June 19, 1935 in Roma, GA to Roy and Susie McEarchern.  In September of 1950, Mamie married the love of her life, Donald Nelson, and after sharing a beautiful life together and raising a family, he preceded her in death in 2009. 

Mamie was a charter member of Higher Ground Baptist Church and she was a devout Christian.  She loved bowling and family reunions.  She found peace in singing praises to her Heavenly Father and she loved singing with her family; her beautiful voice will continue to resonate in the memories and hearts of her loved ones.

Mamie was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 59 years, Donald Nelson; son, David Nelson; and brothers, George McEarchern, and Franklin McEarchern.  Left to cherish Mamie’s memory are her daughters, Debra Pickwell and husband Curtis, and Darlene Bartley; sons, Donnie Nelson and wife Sandy, and Darryl Nelson; sisters, Margaret Earwood, and Betty Metcalf; 19 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and four great-great- grandchildren. 

A special “thank you” to Mamie’s son, Darryl Nelson, who unselfishly dedicated the last six years of his life in taking care of his mother.  The family would also like to thank the nurses and staff at Ballad Hospice. 

Mamie will be laid to rest next to her husband, Donald, at East Lawn Memorial Park.
