I have the good fortune of knowing Ray as a friend, mentor, teacher, and especially as a motivator and promoter. I started as a Nationwide agent in 1975. Ray had been a Nationwide agent since about 1965. Toward the end of my workday, I would always try to stop by Ray's office to get my daily dose of encouragement. Many times I went in feeling pretty low. Ray had me feeling positive again when I left his office. I still remember him asking what I had sold that day. I told him that I hadn't had a successful day even though I had spoken to several people. Ray replied, "you did have a successful day. You were sowing seed". One agent asked if he could have some of the business I had written if I failed. Ray assured me on a regular basis that "failure" was not going to happen. I retired in 2013 with 37 years as a Nationwide
Being good friends with Ray I can attest to his compassion for his fellow man, especially those he considered less fortunate than himself. Having spent a lot of time with Ray, I had the occasion to remark to him that I thought one of the reasons he had been rewarded so in his business dealings was that he was so considerate and sympathetic to others. I really don't think that he had ever considered that of himself.
Having had some health problems of my own, I delayed connecting with Ray for some time, though reminding myself every few days that I needed and wanted to do that. So sorry that I waited too long. I am going to miss a good friend. But, I am not going to forget him.
