We love CM and Barbara. Barbara brought us into CM's life. It was obvious any time you were around them of the love they shared. He was welcoming and encouraging right from the beginning. It was one of the highlights of our time in Johnson City to spend time with them. CM had an adventurous life - we enjoyed the stories and history. He spread the happiness he had in his life which made it such a joy to be around him. His wisdom, his calmness, his laughter. He was one in a million, maybe a billion. We will miss him so much.

I met C.M. 30 years ago in the early 90's. We were actually competitors in the waste collection business calling on government business. He with the old Waste Management (WM) and me with Browning-Ferris Industries (BFI). He had been a District Manager for several years before that. Anyway, one day in a strange reorganization somehow WM let C.M. leave the company. My boss at BFI called me up after hearing this news and asked what I thought about grabbing C.M. for our team. I said that's a pretty easy answer; you should hire him today because I haven't been able to make a dent in his accounts in Upper East TN or SW VA at all. We hired C.M. and rolled up the victories. Later on, we all left BFI after they shut down and became the new WM and had many years of success and fun being the best garbage haulers in the business. C.M. and I worked on several deals together through the years. I learned the need to chill out a bit and realize the value of patience under him. He had a presence that was large when meeting with government officials. Not only was he very handsome and seemed to be dressed like the President at all times, but he also had an air about him that made folks relax. I rode hundreds of miles with him in his car all over Upper East TN and SW VA learning several facts and much history. He passed along many contacts and pointers that I used to my benefit later on and I'm extremely grateful for his counsel. I had the pleasure of dining with C.M. and Barbara and also working with nephew Drew. My wife Sandy also worked with C.M. several years and loved him too. May the Lord be with you in this time. Losing a family member is hard; extremely so when they are a person like C.M.

Tony and I will carry with us always our loving memories of CM. From the time of his engagement to Barbara, we have enjoyed his sense of humour, ever ready with words to lighten the loads of others, bringing smiles to all around him. Whether helping to prepare for our wedding, hosting us in Kingsport, or joining us for dinner when in Nashville, CM always brought a convivial spirit to our time together. Always did his deep and steadfast love for his wife Barbara shine through his words and actions. As one of the kindest and gentlest souls we've known, we will cherish our memories of our time together.

C M Memories
C M and I have known each other over 70 years. I consider him more than a friend, maybe more than a brother. He certainly is a bookmark in my life. Lots of detailed memories. Particularly in Bullett Park.
1955 we were on the Fire Dept Little league team together. C M was the catcher. Doug Shuler and I were pitchers. Chet Palmer & Roy Laster were coaches. That year, Carmines (the real one) was our sponsor. Carl Murphy (Carmine’s husband) was a huge supporter and promised the team members a drink after each win. We won 17 straight games. Imagine a summer where 12 Little Leagurers (several black) sat at Carmine’s counter in their uniforms 17 evenings (twice a week). Would love to listen in on that.
1959 we were on the first Powell Valley Vikings football team together. C M played right tackle (offense & defense), George Polly played guard and nose guard, I played quarterback/ fullback and inside linebacker, Phil Buchanan played right end. No team scored against the Vikings around that side of the line. My memory of C M was during a home game, we kicked off. Bunch of us were in on the tackle and could hear singing. Looked up and there was C M standing & singing, “You ain’t nothin’ but a hound dog”. I still have a recording of that first PV/ Appalachia football game. PV loses every time I play it. On occasion, C M, George, and I would eat supper at my home on Wyandotte Avenue after football practice. I remember my grandmother Bess telling me that a gallon of milk would disappear and she worried that the refrigerator door gaskets would be eaten.
1960 The infamous summer trip C M, George Polly, & I took to Knoxville. It starts, we were about 4 miles out of Big Stone in Lee County, I was driving, George was riding shotgun, and C M was in the backseat. I hear a thump, George yells, “OOW”, and C M says, “I think we just hit a kid on a bike”. I look in the rearview mirror and this kid is bouncing down the road on his butt with sparks coming from the rivets on his jeans. I stopped on the shoulder of the road and we get out of the car. We see this woman come out of this house running toward us. We b scared. Anyway, she gets to the kid, lifts him up by his left shoulder, and proceeds to thrash his behind with her free hand. She yells, “How many times have I told you not to ride the bike in the road?” Then to us, “You boys get out of here.”
Lots of other memories involved with that trip. For years, it was C M’s job to tell that story as only he could. I recorded one version. Still delightful.
More memories. The class of ’61 class reunions with C M attending.
The night he & I received our Legends of the Park certificates.
And on and on. Not Forgotten

It was always a pleasure to be with CM. I remember the laughter, most of the time, uncontrollable laughter when we gathered in the lounge of the Comfort Inn in Big Stone during a Big Stone Gap, Powell Valley High School Reunion .CM stole the stage with the crazy antics of our teen years. We always shared precious memories of our days together, growing up in Big Stone. He was loved and will be missed. Prayers for his family. Joyce Bailey Gladstone
