Obituary of Lloyd Hughston Tate

Lloyd Hughston Tate, 87, of the Yuma community, went to be with the Lord (Sunday February 16th, 2014) at his home with his family at his side. Born in Scott County to the late, Andrew and Augustine Tate, he attended Cleveland School in Yuma, Va. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a seaman first class on the USS Chaffee Destroyer escort in the South Pacific. He retired from the Mead Corporation in 1988 after 44 years of service. Lloyd enjoyed restoring and driving antique cars and tractors. He collected clocks and knives and enjoyed gospel and bluegrass music. He was a lifetime member of the Weber City Volunteer Fire department of which he was awarded firefighter of the year in 1996. He was awarded citizen of the year in 1994 by the Yuma Ruritan. He was a member of Vicars Chapel Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Belle Mullins and Thelma Howell; brothers, Auburn Tate, William "Buster" Tate, Reuben Tate, Massie Tate, Henry Tate and Clarence "Tater" Tate He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Jamie Nell (Sandidge) Tate; two daughters, Sandra Darnell and husband C.E. , Kathy Livesay and husband Rusty; two sons, Harold Tate and wife Edith and Donnie Tate and wife Freda, all of Gate City; nine grandchildren, Gary Darnell and wife Heather, Waterford, PA, Daniel Tate and wife Jodi, Gate City, Rebecca Green, Gate City, Josh Tate and wife Holly, Mount Carmel, TN, Laura Furcron and husband Thomas, Roanoke, VA, Andy Tate and wife Amanda, Aaron Tate and wife Leslie and Sarah Jones and husband James, all of Gate City; thirteen great grandchildren, Seth and Caleb Darnell, Kaylee and Kyndall Green, Abigail and Kyra Tate, Lucy, Tessa, Willa and Norah Furcron, Emilee and Colton Tate and Briana Jones; several nieces and nephews The family will receive friends from 4 till 7pm Tuesday (February 18th, 2014) at Scott County Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 7pm with his grandson, Rev. Gary Darnell officiating. Music will be provided by his family. A graveside service will be conducted at 1pm Wednesday at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City with Rev. Stephen Caldwell officiating. Military graveside rites will be presented by the American Legion Post 3/265. Those who plan to attend the graveside are invited to join the family in procession to the cemetery by meeting at the funeral home at 12:20pm. Pallbearers will be Gary Darnell, Daniel Tate, Josh Tate, Thomas Furcron, Andy Tate, Aaron Tate, James Jones and Duffie Cox. Honorary Pallbearers will be nephews. Special thanks should go to his caregiver, Patricia Bloomer and to Wellmont Hospice, Nova Health Care and Rehab and the HMG staff. Donations may be made to the charity of one's choice in memory of Lloyd.
