Obituary of S.F.C. Walter E. Hicks

S.F.C. (Ret) Walter E. Hicks, 86, formerly of Kingsport passed away on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at Countryside Healthcare and Rehab in Lawrenceburg, TN. Mr. Hicks was born Horton Summit, VA in 1928 to the late Robert Bordy and Jane Parrish Hicks. He served in the U.S. Army for over 25 years, serving in Korea, Japan, Iceland, Germany and Vietnam. He retired as a Air Defense Communications Specialist having served also with the Artillery and Infantry, retiring in 1972. SFC Hicks was awarded the Bronze Star medal for action in Vietnam. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Carrie E. Hicks; two brothers, Doug Parrish and Fred Parrish, and his sister, Mae Sheppard. Survivors include his daughter, Debi (Tennant) Shaver; son, Justin Hicks, and granddaughters, Jalene Clemons and Emily Stewart; two sisters, Betty Young and Jane Herther, brothers, David Parrish and James Parrish, and best friend, Thelma Light. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11:30 am on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport. Military graveside services will follow at East Lawn Memorial Park, Kingsport, TN, conducted by Hawkins County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to the Kingsport Animal Shelter, 2141 Idle Hour Road, Kingsport, 37660. Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport is serving the Hicks family.
