Emmett “Eugene” Cookenour
January 15, 1926 to August 13, 2018
Emmett “Eugene” Cookenour, 92, of Kingsport, went to his eternal home with Our Lord and Savior on Monday, August 13, 2018.
In addition to serving his country in the Merchant Marines and in the United States Navy during WWII, he retired from the United States Navy Reserve. He served the people of Sullivan County as County Commissioner, and retired from his position of lead fireman in the boiler room at Mead Corporation in 1988. He answered God’s call to be an integral part of the building of Brados De Jubilo church in Brazil.
In addition to his parents, Joseph and Dona Bell Cookenour, he was preceded in death by his son, Chester E. Cookenour, grandson, Brian E. Cookenour, sister, Mable Greene, brothers: Echol, Estol, Earl, and J.C. Cookenour.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved bride of 70 years, Norma Jean Lane Cookenour and his children: Michael L. (Jill) Cookenour, Sean Otto (Mary) Cookenour, and Trish Cookenour (Phil) Davis, Rosalind Koscher. Grandchildren: Jennifer Cookenour (Brad) Hubmann, Dana M. (Abby) Davis, Leslie Davis (Bryan) Reynold, and Houston Matthew Cookenour. Great-Grandchildren: Lauren and Ellison Lyons. Cooper, Brylee, and Boden Reynolds. Grey and Avery Davis. Adam, Jacob, and David Cookenour. Sister-in-law, Fannie Steele, and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 11am to 1pm on Thursday, August 16, 2018, at Carter-Trent Funeral Home in downtown Kingsport. Funeral service will begin at 1pm.
Military graveside will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Serving the family as Pallbearers: Dana Davis, Houston Cookenour, Tony Cookenour, Bryan Reynolds, Adam Cookenour, Keith McNew, and Neil Steele and, as Honorary Pallbearers, Brad Hubmann and Martin Bagwell.
