So sorry to hear of Ron's passing. Got to know him when he was driving for Valleydale in the early 80's. We stayed at the same motel in Pikeville, KY a couple of nights a week and went out to eat together. Had some great times together and he was always smiling and laughing. Thankfully, I got to speak with him last year. One of the people and times, I will never forget.

Today has been a day to reflect and ponder on some of the many memories I have of my Uncle Ronald. He was the big brother I didn't have and I love him dearly.
I would like to share a few of my memories of Ronald: Ronald was 7 years older than I, imagine me as a 3 or 4 year old which would make Ronald 10 or 11. He was in town shopping with Mammaw & Papaw and he saw a beautiful pink dress with silver threads, bonnet and purse that he wanted me to have for Easter. Money was tight. Ronald said he would do without so I could have the dress. That was not enough to get the dress, so....Ronald laid down in the middle of the floor in the store and pitched a tantrum until I got the dress, bonnet and purse. Just think about Ronald being 10 or 11 years old pitching such a fit for his little niece to get what he wanted her to have. I still have that dress, bonnet and purse. I took pictures of my granddaughters in that same dress.
I remember him taking me hunting and me sliding down the icy knob across from his house. I remember him taking me berry picking and him telling me to stand on the dirt road near the reservoir and me getting tired of waiting. So while I was waiting I decided to lean on the shotgun. I knew I couldn't rest on the barrel so I put the barrel end on the dirt road and rested against the butt of the gun. When Ronald came back to where I was standing and later tried to shoot a bird, dirt went everywhere. I learned that day that you never stand the end of a gun barrel in the dirt. Instead of dirt flying I could have caused a much greater calamity if a rock had been jammed in the end of the barrel.
I remember climbing trees and the tier poles in the barn with Uncle Ronald. And even getting on top of the barn. Playing basketball, badminton and horse shoes. I also remember playing burnout with him. In case anyone doesn't know what burnout is - it is throwing the baseball as hard and fast as you can to another person, making that person back up to avoid the burn felt in the palm of your hand if you didn't catch the ball in the pocket of the glove like you were suppose to catch it.
And yes, there was riding a bicycle, little red wagon rides on the concrete porch after it was poured. The rooster tearing/flogging Ronald's back all to pieces and we were afraid to go to the out door toilet until the rooster became Sunday dinner. Ronald and I canning cabbage in little vanilla bottles while Mammaw was doing the regular canning.
There was the catching crawdads and salamanders in the creeks and rocks. And who could forget turning over the dried cow piles to get the worms to fish with. Then there was going to the river with Daddy, Ronald and Papaw to night fish. It is no wonder I was the biggest tomboy that ever was. My Uncle Ronald/big brother treated me like a little brother!
In later years there was his friendship he extended to my husband Barney and going camping together with Uncle Ronald & Aunt Laura Mae when Lori, Stevie, Peggy, Mark & Ben were little. Actually Peggy and Ben were toddlers. Oh my!
And then there was the compassion that Uncle Ronald and Aunt Laura Mae extended to Barney when he was facing his terminal illness. Their visits were greatly appreciated and both Barney and I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent together with them and the times that they visited with Barney when I was at work.
But then, there is the greatest memory of all. In the spring of the year that I was in the first grade, we were having revival at Barker's Chapel. I vividly recall Uncle Ronald, with Aunt Joyce right behind him, going down the aisle to the alter. It was at that moment that I realized that I, even as a young child was lost, headed for hell and in need of a Saviour. I too went down that aisle, just Jesus and me. I accepted the Lord as my Saviour that very night and will never forget it. We don't always live our lives as we should and be the right kind of witness but the most important thing is that accept the Lord as our Saviour. If you have done that you will want a personal relationship with your Saviour. My prayer is that all who read this, if you have not accepted the Lord as your Saviour that you will do so before it is to late. Jesus died for the sins of the entire world. All we have to do as sinners is to believe that He died for our sins, ask for forgiveness of our sins and accept Him as our Saviour.
My mind has been flooded with memories today and I haven't even begun to mention all of them. I love Uncle Ronald dearly and will miss him greatly. But from conversations we have had during our adult years, I am not without hope. I plan to see him again someday.
Thank you for letting me share my memories of Uncle Ronald

One more thing: Remember his need for speed in his younger days? Well, when I got my learners permit/drivers license - I could never go fast enough for him. Hummmmm
