It was my pleasure to work with Doug in Building 13 for many years. Not only was he an excellent operator, but he was also a very proud ex-Marine. We discovered that we had almost crossed paths at the Marine Base at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Not only was he a Marine, but he was Recon Marine, a select group that enjoyed jumping out of perfectly good airplanes and helicopters.
In addition to being an excellent operator and Marine, he was also a wonderful artist. He created the character, TC Careless, a bumbling operator that always managed to do things the wrong way in the Organic Chemicals Newsletter for many years. After retiring, he was not content to just enjoy life. Instead, he became a Master Gardener. This was not just a certificate that he hung on the wall. He became the heart of the organization. Many beautiful settings around the area felt his hand and he trained many more in their craft.
I think I can safely say that he left the world just a little better than he found it.
Ned Moore

My brother-in-law, Doug Hilton , passed away Saturday, October 7th. I only say "brother-in-law" so you know he was Tom's brother, but he was also a brother to me from the moment I first met him. Doug was 5 years older than Tom, and his only sibling, so it is tough. However, Doug was in such excruciating pain from a recent backwards fall which severely damaged (shattered) his T-11 disc, on top of already having had multiple back surgeries and neuropathy, that the pain had become unbearable and took a toll on the rest of his body. He died suddenly and unexpectedly from a heart attack. Due to the amount of pain Doug was in, we are comforted only that he is out of misery. No more suffering. Naturally, he is missed terribly, but he left us with many great memories and love.
He cherished his beloved wife, Carolyn Hilton, and their Dobermans throughout the years. He loved to joke, play pranks, garden, read, and listen to music (all kinds but especially classical and early rock 'n roll). He was honest and kind, but could also set you straight with a good, stern talking to...lol. He was proud to be a U.S. Marine and Vietnam Veteran. He got great pleasure from the gardening volunteer work he did as a member of the Northeast Tennessee Master Gardener Association. He was project leader at the Harvest of Hope Community Garden in Kingsport, TN, which fed the homeless, as well as created the gardens and beautified the Appalachian Fairgrounds in Gray, TN. When we would visit, I took many pictures at the fairground, as I love gardening, too, and really appreciated the hard, laborious labor of love that went into creating, establishing and maintaining the gardens. When the last year that he volunteered at the fairgrounds came, I got an idea to surprise him with a memory book and this movie. He was delighted. It shows how the project evolved over many years. There were many educational play stations for the children. He beamed when sharing the interesting and unique ways that the children could learn through the exhibits. Doug was also an artist and cartoonist. He drew and painted most of the murals at the fairground (if not all, I am not sure). He loved the people he worked with. I don't know all of his friends and associates, but if you were in his life he loved you. I hope you enjoy this video. I especially like the oriental garden and water feature at the end. It is so peaceful. Doug certainly left a good mark in the world. ❤
Asking love and support especially for Carolyn at this time. Naturally, she is overwhelmed with grief so cards instead of phone calls are appreciated at this time. Carolyn was Doug's queen, and his primary concern was always for her. There will be no funeral so please memorialize Doug in your own special way. He will always be in our hearts and minds.

Poems for my brother Doug, by Tom Hilton
BY ANY OTHER
I can’t call my brother, Doug, today,
or ever again,
and it’s the “ever again”
that makes the hole in my world
that will not, and
can not,
be filled
by any other.
--------
WITH THIS PASSING
Today,
my brother's death
weighs heavy in my heart.
A unique, smart, and
strong subject,
a center of awareness,
is no more.
The world (and
I know, my world)
is less,
with this passing.
---------
THANKS, BOBBY
If I were to tell you
about my life as a boy,
I would have to tell you
about my big brother, Doug.
From even my first memories,
there was always a big
brother in my house.
Now, having a big brother,
especially one who is five-years older,
is both a comfort and a challenge.
The challenge was that
he could run faster, jump higher,
beat me at any board game,
and he was warrior courageous:
doing back-flips from our
very high, front porch and
landing on his feet.
The comfort was that
he was always there for me:
my protector, leader, and coach.
Doug also had a rich, creative
artistic intelligence with which
he created and sketched
an imaginary place
that he called “Bullaville”
in which he was “Bobby”,
and I was “Billy”, Bulla.
I hope you had, or
were, a big brother like mine.
Thanks, Bobby.

Doug was a very fine man! He was a very dutiful husband, a good provider for his wife, Carolyn, and morally sound.
He loved his church and the country of Ireland. He used to make us laugh as he lovingly told jokes with an Irish accent.
He would visit my parents and enjoy my daddy's stories of Spring Creek in the 1930s. He honored them and made them feel
important.
I am so sorry for your great loss, Carolyn. His pain is over and he is with the Lord Jesus and his parents John and Leora
in heaven.
Much love to you and famiy,
Annie Webb DeHart
