Obituary of Betty Sue Stokes

Betty Sue Stokes, 76, of Weber City, VA, passed away on Tuesday, December 26, 2023 at her home.

She was born in Scott County, VA on July 5, 1947 and was the daughter of the late James Griffin and Gertrude (Rhoton) McDavid. Betty was a member and attended Roller’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 54 years, Don W. Stokes in 2020; sisters, Kathy Hensley and Rosie Neeley; brothers, James Griffin and Paul Griffin.

Surviving are her daughter, Anita Gillenwater and husband David, of Church Hill, TN; son, Rick Stokes and wife Jennifer, of Gate City, VA; grandchildren, David Lee Gillenwater and wife Ashlynn; Aaron Stokes and wife Katie; Brayden Stokes; great-grandchildren, Maylee, Ella and Kyler Gillenwater; sister, Elizabeth (Lizzy) Mitchell; very special friend and neighbor who was like a son, Jimmy Darnell; along with several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm Friday, December 29, 2023 at Scott County Funeral Home. Services will follow at 7:00 pm with Pastor Robert Brown and Rev. Jimmy Darnell officiating. Music will be provided by Kim Robinette and Wilma Bledsoe.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, December 30, 2023 at Holston View Cemetery where family and friends are welcome to gather at 10:50 am.

Pallbearers will be David Lee Gillenwater, Aaron Stokes, Brayden Stokes, David Gillenwater and Bo Griffin.

Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, VA is in charge of the arrangements.
