Obituary of Doris Lindsey Tipton

Proverbs 31:10 “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.”

Doris Lindsey Tipton, 81, of Gate City, VA., fought a good fight, kept the faith, and entered into her eternal home on Friday, March 1, 2024.

She was born in Scott County, VA on April 29, 1942 to Arland “Shorty” Williams and Bonnie Ruth Williams. Doris enjoyed sewing, knitting, and crocheting special gifts for her friends and loved ones. After attending old time singing school as a child, the Lord placed the love of music in her heart. She sang for decades with her family telling everyone near and far about Jesus. Doris retired as a school bus driver for Scott County, VA after 32 years. It wasn’t just a job, it was a calling. Known as the “bus garage Momma” or “Granny”, she shaped the lives of countless children, parents, and faculty. Above all, she lived her testimony shining the light of her Lord everywhere she went.

In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by daughter, Sheila Lewis, an infant daughter, granddaughter Faith Chantrelle McMurray, and brother, Jerial Williams.

She is survived by daughter Lisa McMurray and husband Rex, sons Aaron Tipton and wife Jessica, Chad Tipton and wife Loretta, granddaughters, Grace Bass and husband Dalton, McKenna Foulk, and Mariah Norton, grandsons Isaac Tipton and wife Sarah, Dillon McMurray and girlfriend Alanah Hammonds, and Jace Smith, great-granddaughter Lacey Jane Tipton, sisters Wilma Million and Brenda Hall, and special fur friend, Bob.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at Scott County Funeral Home. Services will follow at 7:00 pm with her son, Pastor Chad Tipton, her son-in-law, Brother Rex McMurray and Pastor Mike Gilliam officiating. Special singing will be provided by her family.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, March 7, 2024 at Tipton’s Chapel Church Cemetery, Gate City, VA. Anyone wishing to attend are asked to gather at 10:00 am at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dalton Bass, Dillon McMurray, Isaac Tipton, Isaiah Ramey, Devan Woods, and Dawson Woods.

Friends and family may call anytime at the home of Rex and Lisa McMurray, Hiltons, VA.

Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, VA is in charge of the arrangements.
