Obituary of John Charles Young

John Charles Young, 84, completed his earthly journey and joined his parents, Sherman and Mary Young and his little brother, Dale. (February 2, 2015) Born in Elizabethton, he lived in Kingsport all his life. John was a 1950 graduate of Lynn View High School and proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. He retired from the Mead Corporation after 41years of service where he was affectionately known as, " Whistler". He had a great love of gardening, camping and golf. He was a skilled craftsman; and a proficient quiltmaker, having made several beautiful quilts for his family over the years. He pulled for the TN Vols and enjoyed going to Pigeon Forge and Dollywood. For several years he played bass for the Short Hill Ramblers. Everything John did, he did with excellence. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother and friend. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Reda Scott Young; son, Keith Young (Mary), Bristol; three daughters, Teresa Carter (Tommy), Aiken, SC, Tina Young, Telford and Joy Bishop (Chris) Kpt; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Phillips (Ron); four brothers, Harold Young, Tom Young(Billie Lee) , Bill Young (Grandel) and George Young (Lois); several nieces and nephews and special friend and helpmate, Teresa Key. The family will receive friends from 4 till 6pm Wednesday February 4, 2015 at Gravelly Baptist Church (located at the former Gravelly Elementary School). A service will follow at 6pm with Pastor David Salley and Rev. Bradley Scott officiating. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 pm Thursday February 5, 2015 at East Lawn Memorial Park with military graveside rites presented by the American Legion Post 3/265. Those planning to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 12:45pm. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Those desiring may make memorials to the Gravelly Baptist Church Building Fund, 500 Gravely Road, Kingsport, TN 37660 Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport is serving the Young family.
