Obituary of Claudia Addington Derting

Hiltons, VA - Claudia Addington Derting, 84, of Hiltons, VA was called home January 1, 2015 after a ten year battle with breast cancer. Claudia was born January 12, 1930, daughter of the late N. Ezra Addington and Jesse Hilton Addington. She was preceded in death by a brother James E. Addington; sisiter, Nannie E. Addington; and husband Ralph M. Derting. She is survived by her daughter, Lennea Derting Hickam and son in law, Stanley Hickam of Kingsport; granddaughter Mariah Hickam Cole her husband Matthew Cole; a great grandson, Mason Cole of Hiltons; son, Keith M. Derting of Columbia, SC. Claudia graduated from Hiltons High School and attended music classed at Milligan College. She spent over fifty years teaching private piano lessons. She was an active member of Darthula Baptist serving as treasurer and pianist. Claudia took part in many community events, playing piano both solo and as an accompanist, in church gathering, weddings, and school programs. In her early post high school days, she played piano on radio broadcasts from Bristol, VA. Her talent was widely acknowledged and appreciated. Claudia spent her life teaching piano lessons to people of all ages. She not only taught piano and music in general, but also taught a deep appreciation for music. Claudia and husband Ralph provided a second home for many young people in the Hiltons' community. She often said that she felt she grew up with the younger generation. Claudia taught much about life in general, having experienced, at a very early age, the Great Depression and World War II. She knew the value of sacrifice and loyalty and neighborhood cooperation. Claudia was also a devoted caregiver to her father, mother and husband for many years. She will be sorely missed be her family and friends. The family will receive friends from 5 pm to 7 pm on Saturday January 3, 2015 at Scott County Funeral Home, 2060 US Highway 23 N, Weber City, VA 24290. A funeral service will follow at 7 pm in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Layton Bentley and Rev. Randy Click and Rev. Paul Blessing with a eulogy by Joyce Derting Summers. Music will be provided by pianists Mariah Cole and Brenda Bentley; and Autoharp, Oscar Harris. Graveside services will be held at 2 pm on Sunday January 4, 2015 at Darthula Baptist Church Cemetery, Hiltons, VA. Pallbearers will be Jeff Arrington, Lynn Derting, Lindsey Fischer, Rob Gardner, Anthony Mason, Ricky McMurray, and Kevin Quillen. Honorary pallbearers will be Omer Addington, Gale Gardner, Claude Hilton, Edsel Hilton, Jim Hilton. Those who wish to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 1:50 pm.
