Obituary of Elsie M Whitaker

Elsie Mae McClain Whitaker, 93 of Blountville, passed away on Friday, November 14, 2014 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. A lifelong resident of Blountville, TN, Elsie was born April 22, 1921 to the late Finley McClain and Maude Dishner McClain. She served on the Outreach committee of Salem United Methodist Church, a member of United Methodist Women, the Salem Widows group and was a Home Volunteer of Indian Path Medical Center. Elsie enjoyed quilting, gardening, cooking and helping her neighbors. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Howard (Jack) Whitaker (2004); her sister, Maggie Bear; and five brothers, Lindsay, Kenneth, Ransey, Archie and Perry McClain. Survivors include her two daughters, Kay (Glenn) Calhoun of Blountville and Dorothy (Paul) Baker of Abingdon, VA; grandchildren, Michelle (Wayne) Woods of Blountville, Beverly Haile of Blacksburg, VA, Paul Wesley (Valerie) Baker of Abingdon; great-grandsons, Eli and Peyton Haile; step-granddaughter, Barbara (Gary) Carroll of Weeki Wachee, FL; three step great-grandchildren and three step great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Virginia and Fannie McClain, both of Blountville; along with several nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held from 5 - 7 pm on Sunday November 16, 2014 at Salem United Methodist Church, Blountville. Funeral services will follow at 7 pm in the church with Pastor Lew Kizer and Rev. John Ousley, officiating. A eulogy will be offered by Brian Winchell. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 am on Monday, November 17, 2014 at Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery. Douglas McClain, David McClain, Ronnie McClain, Robert McClain, Richard McClain, Gary Mannering, Randall Mannering, Wayne McClain, and Bradley McClain serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are W. Michael Smith, Fred Allison, Richard Jones, Ralph Smith, Ralph Barrett. Those attending are asked to be at the cemetery at 11:15 am. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. W. Michael Smith and Angie Morelock for their wonderful care.
