Obituary of Sallie Overbay

"Be strong and courageous for the Lord will be with you wherever you go" Joshua 1:9 Sallie "Ruth" Overbay, 81 of Kingsport went to be with her heavenly father after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday October 14, 2014 at her home surrounded by her family. First and foremost Mrs. Overbay was a child of God. She was a loving wife, mother, aunt, daughter, sister and grandmother, who will be deeply missed. She was a long time member of Morrison City Mission of Kingsport. She was preceded in death by her mother and father Dessie and Hughie Hommell; husband, Howard Overbay; brother, Wayne Hommel; sister, Doris Hommel Gilliam; granddaughter, Rebecca Akers. Ruth was survived by her son, Richard H. and wife Pat of Church Hill; daughter, Debbie Pierson and husband Paul of Gate City; brother, Charles Hommel and wife, Rosanell of Kingsport; sister, Patsy Barnett and husband Don of Gray; sister, Brenda Martin and husband Ken of Molena, GA; grandchildren, Christy Sewell and husband Joe of Mt. Carmel, Hope Young of Hiltons, Chris Overbay and wife Tonya of Kingsport, Clayton Pierson of Clinchport, Dewey Lemmons of Church Hill, Aubrey McCarty and husband Chris of Kingsport; great grandchildren, Gracie and Josie Sewell, Nikkie and Steven Johnson, Taylor, Zach and Jewell Lemmons, Brandon and Anthony Akers and Briley McCarty; several nieces and nephews; along with many special friends and neighbors. The family will receive friends from11 am to 1 pm on Saturday October 18, 2014 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, 520 Watauga Street, Kingsport. A service will be held at 1 pm in the funeral home chapel with Brother Joe Hill officiating. Music will be provided by The Transformation Singers. Burial will follow at East Lawn Memorial Park, Kingsport. Pallbearers will be Chris McCarty, Jeff Hommel, Caleb Hommel, Ken Martin, Hope Young and Addie McMurray. The family would like to thank the office and staff of Dr. Paul Kramer at Kingsport Oncology and the nurses and aids at Caris Hospice. We would also like to extend our heartfelt appreciation for all the prayers, visits, calls and meals from all the many special friends in her life. Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport is serving the Overbay family.
