Obituary of James Robert Thompson

JAMES ROBERT THOMPSON Weber City- James Robert Thompson, 87, of Weber City, peacefully went to be with the Lord at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center on Friday night (October 10, 2014). James was saved at an early age and lived a devoted Christian life with much love for all his family. He was born in Freemont, Virginia on May 19, 1927 to the late Charles Robert Thompson and Donnie Gertrude Thompson. He attended Dungannon High School and received a BS degree from ETSU. James served in the U S Army mostly in occupied Germany following World War II. He retired from the Scott County Department of Social Services after 36 years of service. He was very devoted to his clients, often going the "second mile" to assist them. He was soft spoken and had a loving heart for all children. James was proud to be a Mason and a Shriner and worked indirectly with the Community Chest. He attended Salley's Chapel for many years where he sang in the choir. He and Kathleen sang for 50 years with gospel quartets, most being with the original Moccasin Gap. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Olene Thompson and brothers, Fred and Ralph Thompson. James Robert Thompson is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Kathleen Stallard Thompson; daughters, Kim (Mike) Lyons (Colonial Heights), Vickie (Johnny) Morelock (Fall Branch); grandsons, Jason (Kristi) Lyons (Bristol), Lucas (Sonia) Lyons (Charlottesville, VA); granddaughters, Alyssa Williams, Morgan Morelock, and Lucy Jayne Morelock (all of Fall Branch); a great grandson, Ira James Lyons; brothers, Cecil Thompson (Ohio) and Chucky Thompson (Maryland); his sister, Nell (Bill) Courtney (Maryland) along with several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. Calling hours will be held on Monday (October 13, 2014) from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Scott County Funeral Home or friends may also call anytime at the residence. A funeral service will be conducted on Monday (October 13, 2014) at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Dr. Lester Morelock and Pastor George Winegar officiating. Music will be provided by Salley's Chapel Choir and Elizabeth Snodgrass. A military graveside service will be conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post # 3/# 265 on Tuesday (October 14, 2014) at 10 a.m. at Holston View Cemetery with family and friends serving as pallbearers. A special thanks goes out to all who helped with James' care at Elmcroft Assisted Living, Nova Rehab & Health Care Center, Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center and Wellmont Hospice for all the kindness shown to the family.
