Obituary of James Starnes

Kingsport - James M. "Jim" Starnes, 82 of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 25, 2014 at Holston Valley Medical Center following an apparent heart attack. Born in Scott County, Virginia, He had lived in Kingsport for most of his life and retired from Pet Dairy following 40 years of service. Jim proudly served his country in the U.S. Army having served in Unit 728 C-Company of the Military Police during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the board of the Johnson City Credit Union. He was a 32 Degree Mason and member of the Kingsport Lodge #688 F & AM and the Knoxville Scottish Rites. Jim was also a member of Starnes Bluff Evangelical Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bettie Fletcher Starnes; and his parents, John C, and Mary Elizabeth Taylor Starnes. Jim is survived by his sons and daughters-in law, Jeff Starnes and wife Shelby and Mark Starnes and wife Karen; brother, Ben Starnes; several nieces and nephews and his special Army Buddies. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Saturday, September 27, 2014 at Scott County Funeral Home in Weber City. A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor David Smith and Rev. David Bolden officiating. Burial will follow in Starnes Family Cemetery in Ft Blackmore, VA with full military honors. Pallbearers will be Charles Starnes, Dan Starnes, David Starnes, Jason Goodman, David Weston, Roger Carter and Rusty Haynes. Honorary pallbearers will be Junior Bowen, Guy Sanders, Ralph Sanders, Haskell Starnes, Herb Matherly, John Tucker and Herb "Tiny" Hale. Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City is serving the Starnes family.
