Obituary of J. D. Rhoton

John D. (J.D.) Rhoton, 74, of Church Hill went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday afternoon (August 13, 2014) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born in Scott County, Virginia and had spent the past 40 years in Church Hill. He was a veteran of the United States Army from 1963-1965. J.D. was a member of the Clinchport Masonic Lodge # 267. He worked at Giant Food Markets from 1956-1984 and went onto retire from Food City in 2003 as Director of Floral Operations. Mr. Rhoton was an avid antique car enthusiast. He was a member of Greenvale Missionary Baptist Church. Mr. Rhoton was preceded in death by his parents, George and Grace Rhoton; his brothers-in-law, James Lawson, Jr. and Douglas Hood; and sister in law, Barbara Hood J.D. Rhoton is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Hattie (Sue) Hood Rhoton; a son, John A. (Tony) Rhoton (Church Hill, TN); his daughter, Christy Mullins and husband, Brian (Church Hill, TN); sister, Bernice Lawson (Franklin, TN); brother, Rufus Rhoton and wife, Imogene (Church Hill, TN); nieces, Mabel McCrary and husband, Bob, Melissa Brooks and husband, Johnny; his special nephew, Steve Rhoton and wife, Maxie; a great niece, Amber Wood and husband, Aaron; great nephews, Derek Rhoton and wife, Angela, Seth Brooks along with his "Best Buddy", Toby. Calling hours will be held on Saturday (August 16, 2014) from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Scott County Funeral Home, 280 Hwy US 23 Weber City, VA 24290 or friends may also call anytime at the residence. A masonic service will be conducted by the Clinchport Lodge # 267 on Saturday (August 16, 2014) at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Joe Shelton II, officiating. Music will be provided by Evangelist Garry Hood and Servant's Heart. A military graveside service will be conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post #3/#265 on Sunday (August 17, 2014) at Holston View Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are Larry Harkleroad, Tom Hurd, Larry LaGuardia, Mike Barbour, Larry Wright, Danny Helton, Caesar Patarazzi, Charles Puckett, and his extended Food City family. Family and friends attending the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 1:50 p.m. Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home is serving the Rhoton family.
