Obituary of Austin C. Godsey

Austin C Godsey (A.C.), 92 of Gate City, died on Sunday morning May 25, 2014 at Indian Path Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born in Scott County and had resided the majority of his life in Hanford, CA having moved back to Gate City in 2001. A.C. was a graduate of Shoemaker High School. Following his graduation he went into the Army Air Corps where he served in the 8th Air Force during WWII. He proudly accomplished 33 missions over Germany as a Waste Gunner in a B-17. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Bronze Star on three occasions. Following WWII, he settled in Hanford, CA where he retired from Davies Machinery as President after 39 years of service. He enjoyed wood working, turkey hunting and especially liked playing golf. He had a wonderful sense of humor as he always enjoyed telling a joke. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church where he volunteered at the food pantry. He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Cornie Wood Godsey; brothers, Dennis and Charles Godsey; sister-in-law, Inez Godsey; first wife, Janet D. Godsey. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Virginia "Ginger" Godsey; son, Austin Godsey, Jr. and wife, Lynne.; daughter, Jamie Godsey-Neubert and husband Michael; grandsons, Logan and Dylan Neubert; sisters, Ruby Nell Daves and husband Guy, Betty Tomlinson and husband, Frank; along with several nieces and nephews and sister in law, Dorothy Hopkins. The family will receive friends from 10 am to 11:30 am on Saturday May 31, 2014 at Scott County Funeral Home, 2060 US Highway 23N, Weber City, Virginia. Also friends may call anytime at the residence. A military graveside service will follow at Holston View Cemetery with VFW Post #4933 conducting the rites. Pallbearers will be grandsons, nephews, and grand nephews. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 161 E. Ravine Road, Kingsport with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church or the food pantry at 161 E. Ravine Road, Kingsport, TN 37660. Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home is serving the Godsey family.
