Obituary of Fred Head

Claude Fred Head, 81, of the Dan'l Boone Community passed away (Thursday May 15, 2014) at Wellmont Hospice House with family and friends by his side. A lifelong resident of Scott County, Fred worked at Holston Defense on the railroad for several years. Later, he retired from the Cyprus Foote Mineral Company. He loved going to car shows not only to show off his 64' Ford Fairlane but spending time with friends. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Patsy McDavid Head; parents, Emmett and Sallie Tipton Head; brother in law, Jake Calhoun He is survived by his daughter, Penny Horton and husband Ricky; granddaughter, Paige Horton; grandson, Peyton Horton; sister, Margaret Calhoun; two brothers, Jerry Head and wife Joyce and Pat Head and wife Kitty; several nieces and nephews; a host of friends and his cat, Baby. The family will receive friends from 4:30-7pm Sunday (May 18th, 2014) at Scott County Funeral Home or anytime at his residence. A funeral service will follow at 7pm with Rev. Riley Boy and Rev. R.D. Stallard officiating. Music will be provided by the Kaylor's Chapel Singers. A graveside service will be conducted at 11am Monday (May 19th, 2014) at Holston View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Roger Dale Free, Lesley Free, Audley Rhoton, Jeff Edds, Nathan Susong and Phil Head. Honorary pallbearers are Mack Edwards, Sam Arnold and Tommy Johnson. Those who plan to attend the graveside are asked to join the family at the funeral home by 10:15 to follow in procession. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fairview Community Center c/o Jerrilyn Horton 10747 Fairview Rd. Blackwater, VA 24221 or to the charity of your choice.
