Obituary of W. Dale Carter

William Dale Carter, 89, died Sunday September 27th, 2015 at his home. He was born June 1, 1926 in Hiltons Virginia to the late Rev. T.R. Carter and Clara Carroll Carter. He proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He graduated from the University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1949 with a B.S. in chemical engineering. He was employed by Eastman Kodak for 36 years retiring as a project manager with Arkansas Eastman being one of his main projects. He also received several patents during his tenure with Eastman. Dale's many hobbies included woodworking, aviation, astronomy and horticulture, with a particular passion for genealogy and land grant research. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis Carmack Carter; sister, Amanda Shaver (Brack); half sisters, Cordia, Wertie and Grace; brothers, Fred (Gladys) John (Helen), Ward and Thomas Rex; half brothers, Carlos, Scott, Robert, Arnold and Lawrence. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mary, of the home; children and step children, Teresa Richards (Sandy), Hiltons, VA, Susan Bullis, FL, Mary Carrier (Greg) Bristol, TN, Brenda McConnell (Jim), Chattanooga, TN, Dale Carter, Bristol, TN, and Allen Fields (Betsy) Winston-Salem, NC; grandchildren, Sheri Bullis Ryan (Dave), Winchester, MA, Jonathan Carrier (Krystal), Johnson City, TN, Adam McConnell (Marilynn), Seattle, WA, Clara Richards Morrell (Ryan), KY, Katie Carrier Arnold (Josh), Bristol, TN, Kendall Fields, Winston- Salem, NC, and Carter Fields, "Little Buddy", Winston-Salem, NC; great grandchildren, Thomas Ryan, Carter Carrier, Rachael Ryan, Hannah Morrell, Mason Arnold, Natalie Carrier, and Riley Morrell; two sisters in law, Shirley Carmack Blackburn (Bird) and Florence Carter (wife of Ward); and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1 until 3pm Wednesday (September 30th, 2015) at Scott County Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 3:20pm at Holston View Cemetery with military graveside rites presented by the American Legion Post 3/ 265 assisted by the Virginia National Guard. In lieu of flowers it would please the family if donations were made to the Sullivan County Archives P.O. Box 3179 Blountville, TN 37617 or to the charity of one's choice.
