Obituary of John Melvin Stokes

John Melvin Stokes, 63, of Kingsport went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 17, 2014 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. John enjoyed racing and fishing. He especially enjoyed playing with his grandkids and spending time with his family. He worked at Smith Mechanical and Controlled air. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Cleda Stokes; niece, Tonya Hammonds. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years Shirley Stokes; sons, Jonathan Stokes, David Stokes and wife Tosha, Thomas Stokes; daughter, Rachel Portillo; grandchildren, Austin Sensuriya, John Logan Stokes, Alex Portillo, Hannah Stokes, Brianna Stokes, Andrew Stokes, Krysten Stokes; sisters, Patricia Donahue, Deborah Head, Joan Oakes and husband, "Tiny", Jeannie Fannon and husband Floyd; along with several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5 pm to 7 pm on Thursday November 20, 2014 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, 520 Watauga Street, Kingsport. A funeral service will follow at 7 pm in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Mike Stout officiating. A graveside service will be held at 1 pm on Friday, November 21, 2014 at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Family and friends who wish to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery at 12:50 pm. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the family in care of Carter-Trent Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1129, Kingsport, TN 37662 to help defer funeral expenses.
