Obituary of Ray H. Marshall

Ray Hayes Marshall, 90, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Margie's Meadow at the Village at Allandale in Kingsport, TN. He was born on July 19, 1923 in the Goshen Valley Community of Church Hill, TN where he resided his entire life. He graduated from Church Hill High School in 1941. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Also, he served with the 99th Infantry Division in the Battle of the Bulge of World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post #21 in Rogersville. Mr. Marshall retired as a rural mail carrier with the United States Postal Service after 32 years of service. Ray was a member of Clay Lodge #9543 F & AM in Church Hill, the Jericho Shrine Temple in Kingsport, and Knoxville Consistory Scottish Rite 32nd Degree for more than 50 years. Ray was a member of the McFerrin United Methodist Church in Church Hill, TN. Ray was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Rhoda Light Marshall; his parents, Hayes William Marshall and Bessie Wagner Marshall; his sisters, Ola Campbell, Clara Skelton, Grace Harris, Chassalee Marshall, Lucy Arnold, Roberta Marshall, Rosella Marshall and Marie Marshall; brothers, Earnest Marshall, Troy Marshall, Grady Marshall and Carroll "Fuzz" Marshall. Ray is survived by two sons, Michael A. Marshall and his wife, Rebecca Jill of Church Hill, TN and Ernie D. Marshall and wife, Anne. He is also survived by grandson Wesley D. Marshall, and wife, Tina, of Marietta, GA; and granddaughter Vickie Alison Marshall Davidson and husband, Landon, of Black Mountain, NC; great grandson Asher Alexei Davidson, and great grand-daughter Ingrid Davidson. Also surviving him are numerous special nieces and nephews. Special friends are Fred Castle, Ruby Collier, Patrick (Pat) Lyons, Ralph Marshall, Shelby Mullins and Melba Powell. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at Carter Trent Funeral Home in Church Hill or friends may also call anytime at the residence of the son, Michael. A Masonic Service will be conducted by Clay Lodge #386 at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. A funeral service will follow in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Regina Shelton officiating. Music will be provided by Willie Cradic, Nina Ketron and the McFerrin United Methodist Church Choir. A military graveside service will be conducted by the Hawkins County Color Guard at the Mountain Home National Cemetery, Mountain Home, TN on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 10:45 a.m. Members of Clay Lodge # 386 will serve as pallbearers. Family and friends attending the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:40 a.m. Instead of bringing food items to family, please donate food items to your church food bank or to the food bank of your choice. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 950 W Faris Road, Greenville, South Carolina 29605-4255 (phone number is 864-271-3444) or to the donor's choice. The family would like to recognize and thank Ray's devoted caregivers at Margie's Meadow at the Villages at Allandale, and they are: Maggie, Sharon, Darlene, Janice, Margaret, Tony, Jennifer, Stacey, Terri, Patsy and Tracy.
