Obituary of Joel H. Smith

Rev. Joel Howard Smith, 79 of Kingsport went home to be with the Lord suddenly on Saturday evening, September 7, 2013 at his home following a brief illness. He was pastor of Pilgrims Chapel Church in Kingsport for over 35 years. He was also the owner/operator of J& S Excavation. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman & Gillie (Killen) Smith; his first wife, Mary F. (Bentley) Smith; and brother, Mark L. Smith. Survivors include his loving wife, Wilma (Jones) Smith of the home; two sons, Joel A. Smith & wife Rhonda and Gene Smith & wife Karen; two step-sons, Steve Stewart and Jeff Stewart & wife Kimberly all of Kingsport.; grandson, David Smith; step-grandchildren, Jade and MacKenzie, Heather Darnell, Chase Stewart; special friend, Marsha Hartsock; along with several nieces, nephews, his church family, and friends. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, 520 Watauga Street, Kingsport. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at Pilgrims Chapel Church, on Bancroft Chapel Road, Kingsport, with Rev. Johnny McGee and Rev. Jim Miller, officiating. Music will be provided by Blood Bought. Mr. Smith will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Gunning's Cemetery, Blountville. Pallbearers will be Dustin Waterman, Andy Gross, David Smith, Michael King, Allen Helton and Clyde Ball. Honorary pallbearers are Richard Ball, Willie Proffitt, J.H. (Butch) Jones, and Bobby Hobbs. Carter-Trent Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport, is serving the Smith family.
