Obituary of Garnetta Sue Lane

We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. II Corinthians 5:8 GARNETTA SUE VERMILLION LANE Weber City - Mrs. Garnetta Lane's soul went to be with the Lord who gave it on August 7, 2013 at Church Hill Health Care (C.H.H.C.) after a lengthy illness. She was born on August 18, 1928, in Scott County, VA to the late Kelly W. and Valice Gray Vermillion. She was an active member of Weber City First Baptist Church for more than 50 years where she loved singing in the choir. She was cherished as a volunteer at The Brian Center, in Weber City, for more than 25 years. She loved God, life, family and others being a very devoted mother, grandmother and friend. She never met a stranger and was constantly helping others in her community, checking on them and driving friends to various appointments. On the night they graduated from Midway High School, May 27, 1946, she and George Clyde Lane eloped. She was an excellent seamstress making many of her daughters' school clothes and later on, her own clothes. She was professionally trained as a hair dresser and worked for several years at Carter's Beauty Salon in Gate City and many additional years in her home. In earlier years, she worked at Parks Belk. In addition to her parents, George preceded her in death on February 3, 1997. A daughter, Conni Fay Lane Holmes, died on Nov. 25, 1992. Two newborn daughters; her sister, Regina Jordan and brother, Kelly Vermillion, Jr., also preceded her in death Survivors include her daughter, Karen (Gwendell) Estepp, Gate City; sons, Randy (Kim) Lane, Gate City, Richard (Sheila) Lane, Kingsport, Kurt (Vickie) Lane; son-in-law, Richard (Gwen) Holmes; grandchildren, Justin (Jessie) Lane, Jacey Lane, Jada Lane, Ruby Lane, Weston Lane, Cade Lane, Aden Lane; step-grandsons Billy Estepp and Jarrett (April) Estepp, several nieces, nephews, friends and her sweet cat, Grady. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. The family would like to thank all the caregivers at The Village, Baysmont-Asbury Place, and CHHC for their love, care, and support during her illness. The family will receive friends at Weber City First Baptist Church, 155 Shady Elm Lane, Weber City, VA from 4:30 pm to 7 pm on Friday, August 9, 2013 or anytime at the home of Kurt and Vickie. A celebration of life service will be conducted after the visitation with Rev. Dean Smith and Rev. Lester Morelock, officiating. Music will be by the choir of First Baptist Church. Graveside services will be held at 11 am on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Virginia, with Rev. Paul Blessing, officiating. Those who plan to attend the graveside are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 am. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Honorary pallbearers are choir members and members of her Sunday school class at Weber City First Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 Eighth Avenue, 7th Floor, New York, New York 10001 or to any charity of your choice.
