Obituary of Elder Carl Smith

Gate City - Elder Carl Smith, 80 of Gate City, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at the VA Medical Center in Mtn. Home, TN. He was a lifelong resident of Scott County and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. Carl had been a minister for over 50 years and pastored several area churches, most recently at Willow Chapel Primitive Baptist Church. He enjoyed singing, being outdoors and working the soil. He was preceded in death by his parents, Camel and Lakie Collette Smith; sisters, Virginia Cassell, Beatrice Castle and Myrtle Taylor; brother, Vernon Smith. Carl is survived by his wife, Clara Kinsler Smith of the home; daughter, Kimberly Byrd and husband Jeffery; sons, Colon Smith and wife Karen, Allen Smith and wife LaDonna and Tony Smith and wife Melissa; grandchildren, Natasha Ketron and husband Wade, Jarrad Byrd and wife Tiffany, Cara Smith, Jeremy "Pookie" Byrd, Derrick Smith, Ashley Byrd, Chelsie Smith, Chasity Smith and Cory Smith; great-grandchildren, Cody Ketron, Gracie Ketron, Haiden Byrd, Jaycee Byrd and Mason Byrd; sister, Betty Lawson; brother, George "Sam" Smith; several nieces and nephews and his church family. The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday August 6, 2013 at Scott County Funeral Home, 2060 Hwy 23N, Weber City, VA. Friends may also call anytime at the residences of the sons, Allen and Tony. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Elder Mickey Gibson, Elder Scott Tipton and Elder Oscar Irvin officiating. Music will be provided by members of the Willow Chapel Primitive Baptist Church. A military graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Holston View Cemetery in Weber City with the American Legion Post 3/265 and the Virginia National Guard conducting the rites. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be Carl's grandsons, Jarrad Byrd, Pookie Byrd, Derrick Smith and Cory Smith along with Cody Ketron, Wade Ketron, Robert Price, Benny Vermillion and Mitch Taylor. Honorary pallbearers will be Matt Maynard, Jackie Maynard, Billy Jack Johnson and the Men of Willow Chapel Church. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the entire staff at the VA Medical Center for the care and kindness shown to Carl during his illness. Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home is serving the Smith family.
