Obituary of Allie Byrd

Allie "Jr." Byrd, Jr., 88, of Gray, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday evening, April 30, 2013 at his residence after a short illness. A lifelong resident of the East Tennessee area, Allie was born in Sullivan County to the late Mr. and Mrs. Allie Byrd, Sr. of Kingsport, TN and lived in the Gray community since 1958. He retired from the Mead Corporation as a foreman in 1986. Mr. Byrd was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Gray, where he served as a deacon and sang in the choir. Mr. Byrd also enjoyed watching local baseball games, spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, volunteering with the church, and reading by the wood stove he kept stoked year round. He was preceded in death by his first wife Adamae Hicks Byrd; his parents, Allie and Gussie Katherine Frazier Byrd, Sr.; daughter, Sharron Byrd Whitaker of Johnson City; sons, Mitchell Aaron Byrd of Signal Mountain and Daniel Kyle Byrd of Gray; sister, Faye Byrd Porter of Nickelsville, VA; brothers, Johnny Byrd and Donald Byrd. Allie is survived by his wife, Lucy Light Byrd of Gray. He is also survived by his son, Stanley Wayne Byrd and wife Glenda of Gray, daughters-in-law Marcia Hamilton (Scot) of Gray and Debbie Byrd of Signal Mountain, TN. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Kimberley Byrd Walters (Frank) of Jonesborough, Rusty Byrd of Louisville, KY, Ryan Byrd and Derrick Byrd of Johnson City, Sam Byrd (Faith) and Douglas Byrd of Chattanooga, and Leigh Ann Whitaker and two great grandchildren, Nora Walters and Nate Walters of Jonesborough. Also surviving are three brothers, Bill Byrd of Church Hill, Jim Byrd of Kingsport, and Rev. Joe W. Byrd (Eileen) of Kingsport along with several nieces and nephews. Mr. Byrd is also survived by an extended family to include his step-son, Gary Light (Kay) of Whitwell, TN, and their son Travis Light (Debi) of Woodstock, GA and daughter Tonia Light Carabajal (Elmo) and their daughters, Sarah and Savannah Carabajal of Memphis, TN. Visitation will be held from 5 - 7 pm Friday, May 3, 2012 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, 520 Watauga St. Kingsport. A funeral service will be conducted 7 p.m. Friday, May 3, 2013 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Sherrel Nave and Rev. Joe W. Byrd officiating. Music will be provided by Larry and Trish Short. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 10 a.m. at Snyder's Memorial Gardens, Gray, TN. Pallbearers will be Derrick Byrd, Douglas Byrd, Rusty Byrd, Ryan Byrd, Sam Byrd, and Frank Walters. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery at 9:50 a.m. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Oak Grove Baptist Church, 396 Oak Grove Rd., Gray, TN 37615 Carter-Trent Funeral Home downtown Kingsport is serving the Allie "Jr." Byrd family.
