Obituary of James Otis Roberts

James O. (Tiny) Roberts, 81, of Hiltons passed away on Tuesday morning (April 30, 2013) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. He was born in Kingsport and had resided in Hiltons the majority of his life. James was a graduate of Shoemaker Highschool. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. Mr. Roberts retired from the Raytheon Plant as a foreman with over 40 years of service. He was a founding member of the Boy Scout Troop # 141 in Hiltons, VA. He served as coach of the Hilton Rams during the 1960's through the 1970's. Tiny was an avid supporter of Gate City Blue Devil Football and enjoyed being in the outdoors. He was of the Baptist faith and attended Emmanuel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Virgie Roberts; his parents, Carl & Lola Mae Burton Roberts; brothers, Phil and Don Roberts; a sister, Gloria Cox; his nephew, Jeff Roberts. James (Tiny) Roberts is survived by his loving children, Brent Roberts, Andrea Roberts Lawson and husband, Brian (all of Hiltons, VA); his precious grandchildren who were the joys of his life, Chase Roberts and Chynna Brooke Roberts; sisters-in-law, Jerlene Wells and Jack (Maplesville, AL), Linda Roberts (Bristol, TN), Sue Roberts (Winterpark, FL); a brother, Harold Roberts and wife, Pat (Kingsport, TN), a uncle, Milton Burton (Kingsport, TN); an aunt, Ethel Lewis (Jonesborough, TN); several nieces, Keela Mims, Kathy Pennington, Lora Bertram, and Amy Roberts; his nephews, Mark Roberts, Craig Roberts, Wayne Greene, and David Askew. Calling hours will be held on Thursday (May 2, 2013) from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Scott County Funeral Home or friends may also call anytime at the residence. A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday (May 2, 2013) at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor David Powers and a eulogy given by Steve McMurray. A military graveside service will be conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post # 3/# 265 along with the VA Army National Guard on Friday (May 3, 2013) at 10 a.m. at Holston View Cemetery with family and friends serving as pallbearers. Family and friends wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 9:50 a.m. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be former members of the Boys Scout Troop # 141 and former players of the Hilton Rams. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Boy Scouts of America, Troop # 86, c/o Holston View United Methodist Church, 174 Church Street, Weber City, VA 24290 or to Duffield Gideons, P.O. Box 275, Duffield, VA 2424 or to the charity of one's choice. A special thank-you goes out to his caregivers, Brenda Lane, Jennifer Baker, Kelly Fugate, and Cynthia Johnson.
