Aunt Ethlyn taught me multiplication of numbers at her kitchen table, when we werent sitting in the carport talking. She was so very sweet and kind always. I enjoyed seeing her with my grandmother, her twin sister Evelyn. I miss those days in the early to mid 1980's. I brought my grandmother to see her twin sister for the last time and they were able to share memories, share love, and agree to see one another again in Heaven. I miss them so- Nick

Barbara and I were in New Mexico visiting our daughter, Brooke, and her family when Mrs. Horne died. I just arrived home late last night and read about her death this morning. Barbara is still in New Mexico and will be there for another three weeks helping Brooke pack for a military move to Houston.
I was in Mrs. Horne's first sixth grade class at Shoemaker Elementary in 1951. My family moved to Kingsport in 1952 so that I could go to Jr. High in Kingsport. Later on as a member of the Kingsport Board of Education, I reconnected with her when she was a teacher at Washington School. My daughter, Brooke, had her as a teacher in 4th grade at Washington.......we closed Madison School and move those students, including Brooke, to Washington.
Both Brooke and I agree that of all the teachers we ever had, Mrs. Horne was by far the best. We both learned much from just being in her class........beyond the text book information. Kingsport is very fortunate to have had her as a teacher for so many years.
She has been missed as an educator since her retirement but she will be missed more as a mother and grandmother. Brooke, Barbara and I want to express our condolences and to tell the family what a wonderful person she was to all her students, parents and colleagues.
God Bless,
D. Lynn Johnson and Barbara, Brooke Zannis

Ethlyn,
WILL always remember the good times we had when Jennifer and Lisa were little girls. There were many from the time we were neighbors until after we moved. You were my bestest friend. I learned so much from you. You were a teacher to everyone you knew, not just the students in your classroom. Loved your sense of humor! Will miss you but looking forward to being your neighbor again in heaven.

From Penny Salyer
Ethlyn was retired but substituting when I was hired as a new teacher at the old Washington Elementary 24 years ago. She was so gracious to me and shared her words of wisdom about teaching gleaned from her years of experience. She was truly a jewel and an inspiration to me. My sincere sympathy to all the family.

Ethlyn was a godly Christian woman. As to when I first met her, I'm not sure. We were members of the same church (Lynn Garden Baptist), and she was also my neighbor. Since I went to a different school, I never had her for a teacher. I'm sure if I had that she would have been my favorite. One of my favorite memories of Ethlyn was taking her to the Table Top Tapestry at church. She was always very pleasant. My prayers go out to all of her family. God will see you through this.

Absolutely, the best teacher that I ever had ! I wrote her a letter many years ago, thanking her for helping me when I needed it the most. I am glad that I did. I use to run into her in Food City and around town, and she would still make me feel special. She use to tell me that they don't make kids like us anymore! Well, I feel the same about her. What an awesome lady and teacher! I share her family's sadness today. I will never forget her.

I was one of her fourth grade students at Washington Elementary. Any time someone asks the who was your favorite teacher question, it is her name I speak. She was truly a wonderful lady. Prayers for family and friends during your time of loss.
