Obituary of Ethlyn Bond Horne
Ethlyn Bond Horne, age 86, of Kingsport, is celebrating today in heaven. Her work here was done on Saturday, January 3, 2015, when she passed peacefully at her home. Her long life was one filled with a love for Jesus, for family and for all those she shared the world with. Her smile was a blessing for all who knew her. A truly kind and giving soul, she will be lovingly remembered.
Ethlyn came in this world a fighter. She and her twin sister were born on October 5, 1928, in Erwin, TN, weighing around 4 pounds each. The doctor wrapped them in a blanket and put them in front of a pot belly stove and said if they were still alive in 24 hours they should make it. At the age of 2, she was diagnosed with polio and spent much of her childhood at Shriner's Hospital. This did not stop her from accomplishing her dreams and goals. Having been raised in Nickelsville, VA, she graduated from Nickelsville High School in 1946 and then from Radford College in 1950 with a degree in elementary education. She married the one and only love of her life, Jimmy, in 1951. She taught 6th grade at Shoemaker Elementary in Virginia before moving to Kingsport where she taught at Washington Elementary School with 40+ years of service. Her love of teaching and for her students was evident to everyone that knew her. She was a member of Lynn Garden Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She loved her church family dearly.
Ethlyn was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Jimmy Horne; parents, John and Violet Bond; sister, Louise Nickels; brothers, Lowell Bond and Raymond Bond; and son-in-law, Jeff Sluss.
Left to cherish her memories are her daughter, Jennifer Horne Swinney and husband, Kenneth "Junior"; grandson, Aiden, who was her pride and joy; twin sister, Evelyn Hall and husband, Ralph; brother-in-law, Pat Horne; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews; and special friend, Deanna "Dee" Kimball.
