Obituary of Zelda Meador Virts

Zelda Meador Virts, age 94, formerly of Shenandoah Junction, WV, and Knoxville, MD, passed away on Friday, September 13, 2013, surrounded by her loving family, at Weber City, VA. Zelda was born at Whitby, WV on November 28, 1918, to the late Mannie and Viola Blanche Meador Griffith. A graduate of Shady Spring High School in Daniels, WV, she attended Concord State Teacher's College, Athens, WV, graduating and receiving her teaching certificate in 1942. Ms. Virts taught in the Raleigh County, WV school system during 1942 and 1943; then locating to Norfolk, VA during World War II she met her husband Charles, whom she married in 1947. Moving to Maryland, Zelda taught in the Anne Arundel and Frederick County school systems, continuing her education, graduating from the University of Maryland in 1955 and obtaining an advanced professional master's certificate in 1972. Ms. Virts 32 years in the teaching profession included teaching various elementary grades, as well as serving as vice-principal of Brunswick Elementary School, Brunswick, MD from 1972 until her retirement in 1981. Zelda was a resident of the Knoxville community of Washington County, MD until 1989, and the Uvilla community of Jefferson County, WV until 2011. She was a member of Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church, Shepherdstown WV. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Charles Edward Virts; brothers, Shelvie Griffith, Harry Griffith, and sister Rosemary Emmons. Left to celebrate her life are sons, Gene Lilly and wife Brenda of Pasadena, MD, and Brent Virts and wife Vicki of Gate City, VA; sisters, Margaret Alexander of Hendersonville, TN and Bonnie Garten of Summerville, SC; brother, Gen. Mannie Rondell Griffith and wife Doris of Martinsburg, WV; ten grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and friends. Following cremation, a graveside service and interment will follow at the Knoxville Reformed Cemetery, Knoxville, MD on Saturday September 21, 2013 @ 1 p.m. with Rev. Randy Tremba officiating. A time of remembrance and fellowship will follow at 3 p.m. at the home of Gene and Brenda Lilly, 7 Sonora Dr., Pasadena, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church, 100 West Washington Street, Shepherdstown, WV, 25443 or the charity of your choice.
